24 March - 22 August. Created in 1982 to pay homage to photojournalism, the Photography Contest of the Spanish Press is now in its 19th year. This year its themes include the issues of war, gender violence and marginalisation, and the featured winning photographers and photojournalists have won grants to complete their projects in various locations across the world. The gritty, tough images on show make for provocative and often harrowing viewing; nevertheless they offer viewers the chance to be moved and to share their empathy with those who are far less fortunate. 23 March 2010 - 11 January 2011. In 1920, pioneering archaeologist Roy Chapman Andrews dismissed warnings of sandstorms, civil wars and armed bandits, as well as derision from his peers, and forged ahead with plans to search for dinosaur remains in Outer Mongolia's Gobi desert. In spite of all the warnings, Chapman went on to make one of the most important paleontological discoveries of all time by uncovering 160 million-year-old dinosaur skeletons, a fossilized egg nest and the remains of an Oviraptor embryo. Madrid's CosmoCaixa now displays 43 of these fossils in an 800 square metre exhibition space. Tues-Sun: 100.00-20.00 more

13 April - 18 July 2010. This musical tells the life story of the French singer Edith Piaf who, against much adversity, rose from the abject poverty of her youth to become one of the most sought-after performers in the world. Famed for her emotive and powerful songs such as 'Non, Je ne Regrette Rien' and 'La Vie en Rose', Piaf (or the 'Little Sparrow' as she was also known) died of liver cancer in 1963, aged only 47. On the day of her funeral, tens of thousands of people lined the street of Paris, bringing the city to a complete standstill. Actress Elena Roger plays the lead role in this Donmar Warehouse production. Tickets available from the theatre box office. Tues-Fri: 20.00. Sat: 19.00 & 22.30. Sun: 19.30 more

1 December 2009 - 1 April 2010. From still life and portraits to winter landscapes and seascapes, all the characteristic genres of the Dutch school of painting are presented at the Museo Nacional del Prado. Central to the exhibition is Rembrandt's 'Artemis' (also known as 'Judith before Holofernes'). The main activity in what is generally meant by 'Dutch painting' took place in the 17th century in the Northern United Province, which became an independent nation following the Treaty of Utrecht in 1579. Many of the paintings on show have not been displayed since the 1940s. Tues-Sun: 09.00-20.00 more
