18 October-22 January 2012. The Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum presents an exhibition of architectural paintings dating from the 14th to the 18th centuries.
The common thread between the paintings is their architectural backgrounds, an inclusion often used by artists to emphasise the scale or importance of their subject.
The museum highlights the evolution of architectural painting, leading ultimately to it being recognised as a genre in its own right by the 17th century.
The exhibition comprises paintings by artists of the calibre of Canaletto, Duccio di Buoninsegna, Giovanni Paolo Panini, Gaspar van Wittel, Hubert Robert, Maerten van Heemskerck, Hans Vredeman de Vries and Tintoretto.
